Visit to Asha Slum Project

While we were in New Delhi, I organized a group of the HBS students to visit the Asha slum project.  I had heard about it after reading the book "Behind the Beautiful Forevers" by Katharine Boo, an amazing book about life in one of the slums in Mumbai.  I was impressed with the way Asha addressed many of the compounding problems of life in the slums that Boo had brought to life (access to healthcare, access to justice, collaboration in the community, education, and many more), so I wanted to learn more.
It was a fascinating visit -- we learned about the community groups they organized among different age groups (from 8-12 year olds to grown women) to activate people to have a political voice in their communities, address problems with police officers and government officials, and pursue higher education.  We heard from a 9 year old who is the tuberculosis specialist in her community and visits families to educate them about TB and identify possible TB patients.  It was really fascinating and inspiring.
Asha wrote about our visit to their donors and my friends sent me the below.

Harvard Business School students visit to Zakhira slum colony
On 11th January 2014, 15 students from Harvard Business School visited Asha to see first-hand the transformational work that Asha has been doing with the slum communities in Delhi. After a brief introduction, the group was shown a documentary film on Asha’s core values and the diverse array of its work in a nutshell.

Later, the group was taken to Zakhira slum colony, where they got an opportunity to meet and interact with the staff, Community Health Volunteers, women’s and children’s group members and the students who are now attending college as a result of Asha’s guidance and support. They listened with great interest as the community members narrated their stories of hope and success during their journey with Asha.

Over the past many years, numerous students and teachers from the university have visited Asha on many occasions to work in the slums or to be a part of Asha events organised in Delhi. It was a real pleasure for Asha to once again welcome a group of students to visit its community in slums of Delhi. We look forward to more opportunities of welcoming friends and supporters from across the globe.
Sincerely,

The Asha Team

A few more photos from our trip in January...

The beautiful Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur  -- featured at the end of this scene in the Dark Knight Rises (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GRIy1W5_gQ)  and easily one of the five most beautiful places I have ever been.
I went on a spectacular sunset zipline tour around the fort -- definitely the coolest ziplining I have ever done!

Some pictures from India

I won't be more ambitious than that for now, but it was a really fascinating and wonderful
Taj Mahal:

Fatehpur Sikri -- a beautiful abandoned palace and mosque complex in Uttar Pradesh, about an hour from the Taj

Pictures from working on our project -- doing customer interviews with mobile money operators and users.  Individuals who used the service were generally migrant workers in delhi who were from other parts of India; they used the system to send money home to their families.  Operators typically ran electronics stores or convenience stores and acted as mini-banks for people who lacked access to financial services.  The partner we were working on the project with managed the technology and infrastructure that allowed these transactions to happen.

Forbes Article

Barbara Bush (the daughter - who is the founder of Global Health Corps) quoted me in an article published yesterday in Forbes - pretty cool! http://www.forbes.com/sites/skollworldforum/2013/07/21/a-decade-of-success-in-the-global-fight-against-hiv-and-aids/

pre-Nostalgia

I've started taking photos of silly normal things.

Arrivals gate at Entebbe airport.... I have come through this gate 23 times in the past 2 years!
Entebbe airport... not a great airport, but a beautiful view of Lake Victoria and a sweet humidity in the air that hits me every time I step off the plane.
Naomi, the lady who brings me a box of cut mangoes every morning in the office for ~$2.  Naomi and I started crying when I told her I was leaving (beyond being friends, I am also by far her best mango customer).
Nairobi airport.  Worse than Entebbe airport.
Plate of food in Addis, yum
The Ministry of Health and CHAI people I work with in Ethiopia

There will be more I'm sure.

In and near Kampala

Some happy times with friends
 Leah, hike in Mabira forest

Weekend on an island in the middle of Lake Victoria for Noorin and Amaan's farewell from Kampala

Crescent Island

Last week, my team for work had a meeting in Lake Naivasha.  We got to spend an afternoon on Crescent Island in the middle of the lake, and it met the definition of awe-inspiring.  Walking around among giraffes, zebras, impalas, wildebeests and water bucks on a beautiful island was simply beautiful beyond belief.
